Let’s Go Fly a Kite – Community Access

In celebration of spring, we enjoyed a gorgeous day flying homemade kites, feeding the birds, and soaking in the sunshine.

After a long cold winter, we were beyond excited to revel in the warm weather and clear blue skies at Lake Mayer. On campus, participants created homemade kites for a fun and engaging activity.  Everyone decorated their own kites adding a personal touch, and a sense of pride, to each one.  After completing the kites, we loaded the vans for our Community Access adventure!  The sun was shining, and the wind was strong.   The sheer joy of seeing our kites take flight for the first time was just one of the things that made this day so exhilarating.  We followed up our exercise by feeding all the birds who were flapping, flying, and gliding through the air. Everybody had a truly amazing day.

Why Community Access?

Community Access Services are integrated into our person-centered plans. We help participants learn the skills they need to come together in our gorgeous community and connect with people.  Having a sense of community is so important to the human experience.  It makes us feel like we are a part of something greater than ourselves and gives us a sense of belonging.  As part of our Community Access Group in the Enrichment Center, EmployAbility provides opportunities to explore the community, cultivate new friendships and natural supports, and practice skills that will increase confidence and self-reliance.

“With tuppence for paper and strings
You can have your own set of wings
With your feet on the ground
You’re a bird in a flight
With your fist holding tight
To the string of your kite”

– Richard M. Sherman / Robert B. Sherman
